Rewired

Plug every caller in. Then the exchange moves their lines.

Rewired is a memory-updating game set in an old telephone exchange. Callers ring one at a time and you plug each one into its jack. Once a caller has been connected a few times in a row, the exchange quietly moves their cord to a free jack, and only that caller's new jack is shown, briefly. The first call after a move is the hard one: your memory still reaches for the old jack.

How to play

  1. Learn the board: every caller sits on its own jack. Take as long as you like, then press Ready and the callers leave the board.
  2. A caller's shape lights up in the lamp. Tap their jack: the right jack connects the call, a wrong one shows you where the caller really is.
  3. After a run of right answers a caller's cord moves to a free jack. Only that caller is shown, flying from its old jack to the new one with an arrow behind it. Their next call is a phantom call, and a tap on the old jack is marked Old line.
  4. Calls mode is 24, 36 or 48 calls, each ringing for a set time from 3.0 down to 1.5 seconds. Clock mode gives everyone one, one and a half or two minutes to connect as many as they can, and Got it holds a move on screen until you have it while the clock runs on.
  5. Your score starts from the setup's difficulty. In Calls it is weighted by your accuracy, so a missed phantom call costs the most; in Clock every right call adds the setup's value per call. Right calls in a row charge a combo that makes each call worth more, and any miss empties it.

What it trains

Updating something you had only just learned well, and holding back the old answer while the new one settles, at the pace the ring or the clock sets. Explore Working Memory training →

Difficulty

The levels climb from two callers and a relaxed ring to six callers, calls that ring for a second and a half and moves shown in a flash. Marathon levels play 48 calls or two minutes at the same difficulty. Every shift is dealt fresh at the same difficulty for its setup.
